One can only wonder at the magnitude and depth of the words Jesus uses in John 14:10-11. Some truths are so wonderful that we may have to wait until we are face to face with our Savior and He can increase our understanding. In the meanwhile, we do not have to neglect these deeper truths but would do well to hold them up and offer them unto the Lord as beliefs which we will save up in our hearts like money in the bank, waiting for that future understanding to be given us in His time.
These special truths that we cannot see in the eye of our imagination nor capture all the importance they could hold for us. Do work wonderful good for our souls when we give them due honor and trust our Lord enough to say, ¨I may not see Father, but you do and it is good enough for me that you shared with me and thought of me.¨ ¨I will simply trust in You, where my understanding limits me and hope and pray that this may bring glory to your name.¨

As we take this kind of attitude towards the word of the Lord and the sacred scriptures, our faith takes on a new life. The Holy Spirit is pleased to show us more wonders and our religion becomes an amazingly beautiful circle of turning to Jesus, holding up our Lord, gazing with wonder and awe, reveling in the size and splendor, rejoicing over the hearts new revelations and then in turn, falling once again to our knees to turn again and bring it all back to Him and offer and hold everything to Him once more.
This is our rightful place as His sheep and His worshippers. Perhaps we don´t see much of this kind of religion today. Instead people are inclined to standing up proudly to boast their sharper knowledge and there more correct theology. The direction is towards men and not bowed before the feet of the one who is worthy. You may make many a discovery in religious areas but if your faith does not feed directly from Jesus and need Him and His consent and power, you are perhaps too full of yourself to ever see or know Him.
So when Jesus tells us that we have seen the Father and that the Father is in Him and He in the Father, we may be overwhelmed. This is not a bad thing. What would be bad is if our God was small enough that we could capture and understand everything about Him. That God would be a limited and simple God and in sharp contrast to the all-powerful, timeless and boundless Creator of all things. Therefore we do not need to capture all that there is to know about Him and it is productive and good for our souls to wonder after Him.
What we can perhaps grasp and put into our pocket is that Jesus showed us how to put our faith in Him. He knew our limitations and He knew that we always try to put even spiritual things in human and material context. He said, if we don´t understand or don´t believe, then at least we can see the works and miracles which He performed. Our puny understandings may be able to catch the fact that He is different and that He is greater. These limitations in understanding the higher truths that we have as fallen human beings, does not need to limit the receiving of good instruction and of hope.
Jesus tells us that if you are not ready to see yet what it means and all that it entails about the unity of spirit between Jesus and His Father, at least we can hold up His works and deeds as something out of the ordinary and give Him credit for that. We are not able to perform miracles, but there was and there is One who can. He is bigger and outside of our realm of sight and understanding, but He came and directed Himself to us and His work was to bring us into communion with Himself and the Father. This is wonderful stuff! I hope anyone who considers themselves a Christian, spends precious moments meditating on such things.
Now Jesus mentions here in John 14:12-14 that those who have received His words and works will be able to ask for and perform the same kind of miracles. I am sure that many serious Christians would prefer not to dig too deep into these kinds of words or teaching of our Lord. However, Jesus said it so it must have place and must have importance to you and I.
Perhaps you have not witnessed any miracles first hand and shy away at the implications of what is happening when miracles are performed. It is true that we enter an area of belief where only the strongest or simplest of faiths seem to feel comfortable. But if you are honest with yourself and your professed belief, than the problem is not yours to support. The question and answer lie in the character and nature of God.
We can say though, that we should have a large enough impression of God, that the things He has expressed about Himself are true even though we may not see how or why it is like that. In our world and in our experience, nature works in one way. There are laws which govern how and why things work the way they do. But to believe in God, we should realize that we have put our faith in One who is completely outside of our realm and these laws cannot and do not affect Him in the slightest.
Therefore, to the one who believes, miracles are possible and should be expected due to the fact that we are dealing with a God from above. However, people overly concerned with performing miracles themselves, may be missing the picture slightly. Jesus explains in these texts that it is right and correct to expect them and to see miracles in our times, but He is not pushing the desire to become modern day magicians.
The closer we are to God and to His Son, the more miraculous things we will see. Wherever the Holy Spirit is free to work, there is sure to be amazing occurrences. Jesus was not calling for you and me to set out on a career as a miracle-healing evangelist. But what He was saying is that by drawing nearer to Him you draw nearer to a different realm and a different set of laws.
God´s kingdom and God´s realm is more real than our own. That is a place completely unlike our own. Things work there under a different set of laws and for different purposes. But the same thing that controls these two worlds is the will of God. He has brought all this into existence and He upholds it and maintains it. For Him, the author and creator who set the laws that govern our world and existence here, it is easy and correct for Him to work inside or outside of those laws. A miracle to us is Him just being Himself and working as He pleases.
So then, if miracles are possible and Jesus has given His word that these kinds of works can and will be done, then I for one would not object. We should look for and appreciate the working of miracles in our day. It is perhaps a sign of the true condition of modern religion that we do not see too many big miracles happening on a large scale. But our faith does not rest on the miracles; it should rest on Jesus Christ.
Wouldn´t you like to see more miracles performed in your life? Jesus made it clear that if you believed enough in Him and His power, that you would see it in your time too. (verse 12) His words were, if you believed than you too would be able to perform the same kind of miracle and even greater ones. Perhaps we should take Jesus for His word today? Wouldn´t you like to join me in asking Him to perform one in your life right now? Let us follow His encouraging and ask in His name. He is there with the Father to work for us and to glorify the Father by performing this great work. Why don´t we ask for a miracle that would bring glory and honor to them both. Let us choose something that would please them and the Spirit. Let us ask for the miracle today of the Spirit of the Lord to enter us. As Jesus said He was in the Father and the Father was in Him. He has promised you and I to send us the Holy Spirit. This is the miracle which we should most desire. This kind of miracle purifies, heals and strengthens the individual. This kind of miracle directs us not down our own paths but back toward the Father and hard on the heels of our Savior Jesus Christ.
May the Lord grant you your miracle today!
