Who Denied Jesus?

The story about Peter denying Jesus is a familiar one.  It is depicted here again in John 18.  We have all read it or heard that story many times.  We may often feel a sense of pity for what Peter may have suffered when he failed His Lord and Master.  But perhaps there is more to learn from the lesson.  God does things for a reason and the fact that the story is repeated, should spark an interest with in us as to what the Lord wants us to understand.

Now many good people hold the belief that words written in the Bible are actually words directed directly at them.  Even when a story such as this tells of another man or served to instruct someone else, these souls search their own hearts to see how it applies to them in their lives.

The Holy Spirit is faithful and sharp to show this kind of believer just where and what those discoveries are.  Any time we approach the Lord to find His true assessment of our relationship and adjustment to Him, He is greatly pleased and moves strongly to strengthen and heal.

Therefore, we may examine the story of Peter with the intention of placing ourselves as the ones who had failed to stay by the Savior´s side.  If we do this in honesty and take the matter before the Lord in prayer, then surely He will reveal those secrets of the soul which we may be concealing from ourselves.  Peter was sure he would not let his Master down, but he did.

What could be some of the things where we have fallen short of today in relation to our Lord?  Have we too had a false sense of devotion and hidden from ourselves all that we could have done to stay by His side?

Perhaps if we try to catch the eye of Jesus over the bustle of the crowd, He will give us the look we need to assure ourselves of the true current status of our faith.  Maybe just a little more effort right now would not hurt us.  Let us try to draw nearer still and give ourselves a chance to know that by Him is where we really want to be.

May He enable us all on this pursuit,

Amen.
