Looking For That Narrow Door

Whereas narrow is the gate and cramped the road leading off into life, and few are the ones finding it.  Matthew 7:14 (Reference Bible)

Jesus calls.

It is for those who hear His voice to react.

Scripture tells us and therefore we can be sure, that not many of us will take the necessary steps to following that call.

I pray that you feel an urgency with me, to turn attention to Him when He speaks so directly to us.  He is infinitely more concerned with our actual and spiritual health than we are.  Carefully but firmly He says, ¨Watch out¨!

The warning we have here is not only from following the trends of the times or the popular religious views, but Jesus is warning us against our own hearts.  It is natural for us to wander along each in his or her own routine or rut, never imagining that we are not actually passing through that narrow gate.

Perhaps a sure sign for us along our chosen path would be the degree of ease.  If you are finding your current walk to be rather simple to follow, maybe you should stop for a moment and consult a map or ask your guide for directions.

By our nature, we humans like to fix things then forget about them.  One thing we cannot stand is to spend time and effort getting something right, then the next day or next moment finding ourselves having to do it all over again because something went wrong.

Unfortunately when it comes to something so valuable and precious as our soul´s eternal purpose, we will need to take great pains each and every day to make sure that it is in its proper place with God.

Imagine you have a very special necklace.  This is not a normal necklace but one of the world´s most expensive ones.  This is the kind of jewel that the best thieves would die to be the one to steal from you.  Not every bank is properly equipped to guard it safe from potential attack.  But you do not want to lose it, so you do anything in your power to keep it safe and in good condition.

If we think of the eternal value of our soul, it may be conceivable that it has more worth than some expensive minerals all polished and elaborated by hand.  Here we are talking of something that has life, thought and feeling.  It was created by God and He had His reasons for your soul and mine.  He does not throw around carelessly the things that are precious to Him.

Therefore, I hope we can agree on the importance on the matter.  So what is the urgency and why all the fuss about the size of the door we would go through.

Well, God in heaven somehow found a way to transform the Divine and Eternal into something earthly and mortal.  This He did to correct the adjustment His people had with Him since our choosing to turn to something other than Him and to our sin.  What is more, this vessel He sent, this person whom He called His Son, came speaking to us of what He saw and knew from the other side of the veil.

Jesus came teaching as no one could, the value and direction to place on all things.  He kept very close to the idea that God´s kingdom was far superior to our own and that we should do anything we can to attain our place with Him there.

Therefore those precious words of instruction hold the weight of eternity.  Let them sink deep enough to start a healing and building towards that endless future.

So, if Jesus says that few we will be, take note and understand that it puts you and me on the edge.  We too are in danger of following some crowd of thought or people.  Let us each one work it out in tears if need be with our Savior.

Let us go first to our knees, and then when we are granted council, put forth our case.  Make it crucial and necessary for you to hear your Savior and guide telling you which path you are actually in.

Do not rest upon your own certainty; it is for sure to have been tampered with.  There is a lot of devious activity between the powers of evil and our fallen nature.  Self has always befriended those and would work along with them to let us go on walking in a direction that gratifies us for the moment.

But the path that leads to life is narrow, and few are we who are finding it.

This is what we are told, so I would prefer to err on the side of cautiousness.  Check often and diligently the condition and safety of that precious jewelry we call our soul.

The way may be narrow, but we have hope and know where to look for it.  That Way is called Jesus.  Please join me in undertaking a journey or quest in finding that Narrow Path.

And may He be your Guide and mine,

Amen
