¨Everyone, then, that confesses union with me before men, I will also confess union with him before my Father who is in the heavens;¨ Matthew 10:32 (Reference Bible)
This text, we could read while taking the literal road, but in spiritual things this is rarely beneficial and dangerously limits our instruction and healing. We could say that Jesus meant that you and I need to open our mouths and boast to others around that we have faith in Him. But perhaps it would be the result of our devious hearts looking for a simple easier way to deal with the text and not implicate ourselves in treason.
You see, we turn our backs on God and on our Savior Jesus Christ a thousand times each day, or we fail to have faith in Him as He has asked. It is so much within our nature that most times we are not aware that we are doing it. Plus the spirit always speaks of deeper things than a superficial act, and the next verse condemns us.
¨But whoever disowns me before men, I will also disown him before my Father who is in heaven.¨ (verse 33)
The truth is we do not deserve His love. We never have. God says, ¨Make me your all,¨ and how many of us are actually able to do that. As hard as we try, it is not something we are able to do.
In verses 37-39, Jesus states that if we look first to our father or mother, son or daughter, we are not worthy of Him. We must not hesitate to face any opposition and we should even willingly let go of our lives, EVERYTHING, without holding back anything for ourselves. But if we don´t, then we are not worthy of Him.
Now there may be some super-humans who can claim to go this far, but don´t you think they are not being honest with the world or themselves?
Therefore, if we depend upon the grace of God to cover over all that we lack and make up for all the impossible things we should do to please our Lord, how in the world can we make amends and set ourselves on the right track.
We don´t want Jesus to deny us before the Father and because He is warning us, we should feel the urgency to correct our standing with the Lord right now, right here today!
If we know the things required of us are greater than our abilities, this means someone else must make up for our insufficiency. In fact, it will have to be done by none other than Jesus. But ¨Wow¨, this is just what He has been saying. He asks to me more to us than ourselves and to accomplish this, this is just what He is offering to do.
We confess that to go where God asks us to go, we are unable. We throw ourselves upon Jesus, including EVERYTHING in our lives, family, careers, possession and desires. He guides us into total dependence on Him. This is a process that gradually grows from the moment we realize we need Him, and never stops growing as we learn more and more each day our need for Him.
If you are serious about hearing Jesus confess your name before God someday, than you will need Him to remove all else from your heart. We need Him to make sure that we have not put family or our own lives before Him. Grace is what has kept us this far and it will take this same grace to take us forward and assure us of that favorable word before the Father.
May you and I realize today just how much is still lacking in our faith and commitment to our Lord. May we find grace to make it urgent enough to seek further grace for the accomplishing of all that we lack in making Him all that He should be to us.
Then, may we be among those blessed few who have lost our very soul and all that was ours in this life. Pray with me that we find grace enough today to place the correct amount of importance on Him in each and every moment. And by His grace, let us yearn to hear His sweet voice say that we are His someday before the Father.
Amen
