Getting Lost on Divorce

And Pharisees came up to him, intent on tempting him and saying: ¨Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife on every sort of ground?¨ Matthew 19:3 (Reference Bible)

When we attempt to see ourselves in a context apart from having a spirit or a soul, we put ourselves in a primitive manner of thought.  Like the beasts of the field, we eat when we are hungry, sleep when we are tired and remove from our conscious any hope or obligation to anything higher than those basic animal instincts we were born with.

Some people prefer living their lives in this way.  They never want to give much thought to deeper truths or question their purpose on earth.  As all the animals they were born, they will live out their years and in the end, they will pass away to be forgotten.

Christians however, take a different stand.  They say that there is another realm, one which we may not see but has life in a very real sense.  This other realm could be referred to as ¨the spiritual realm¨, ¨heaven¨, or ¨the kingdom of God.¨  In this kingdom dwells God the creator who brought all other things into existence.  Out of unfathomable wisdom and power all that you and I see, (and even things we can´t see), were carefully designed, made, and maintained in functioning order.

But there are problems even Christians may encounter as we try to walk down our chosen road of thought.  We have so many tendencies of our human nature that would draw us back to the more basic thinking patterns again.

In Matthew 19 some of the religious leaders came to Jesus with a question over divorce and did this to put our Savior to the test.

Jesus uses this opportunity to lead us into understanding that there is something greater happening here.  True, we are created creatures, but there was design for us since the beginning of our race.  True, we have the custom of growing up and leaving our parents.  We join with a spouse but that too was part of the design for our species.  The fact that we do not see clearly into the ¨other¨ realm does not remove its existence or our obligation to it.

We could choose to look here at the human rights of tradition, custom or worldly acts of marrying or separation.  We could follow the Pharisees and church leaders with a beastly mentality and search for a law or governing rule.  Or we could look up.

Jesus intended to aid us in doing so.  He tried to show us God´s intentions for us.  He wanted us to know and see that we are not mere beasts.  There is a deeper more significant plan happening here that runs to more important ends.  There is a God above who created us and is forever drawing us closer to Him.  His purpose for us was made by design and never intended  to separate us from the spiritual or the Divine.

God is Spirit, and we too have a spirit or a soul.  Something big is going on with the human race and we insult God when we try to drag the issue any lower than what it is.  The Pharisees were bolstered in their earthly tendencies because Moses, who had brought them their directives from God, had given them permission.

It is sad to see those men stooping so low and ourselves in turn. When we look away from God and His eternal plan.  Tragic, it seems that we are forever taking the spiritual out of worshipping the Great Spirit who is our God.

Dear Lord, forgive us for constantly looking to our ways.  We are so animal like in our tendency to make all things earthly.  We forget to look to You and know that You are forever working Your incredible plan for us.  Please help us direct ourselves so entirely to You that Your kingdom and Your realm begins to have its proper importance for us.  Then we will no longer need to wallow in our petty rules, ways and vision.

Amen
