Jesus and Children

Then young children were brought to him, for him to put his hands upon them and offer prayer; but the disciples reprimanded them.  Matthew 19:13 (Reference Bible)

How many of us can remember the excitement and joy we experienced as children when we were going to meet someone special to us?  Every year, children wait in lines to meet Santa Clause or the three wise men and tell them what they want for Christmas.  Some children jump up and down as they can hardly wait.

But the person in a big costume is still only a man, even though the children believe him to have magical powers and will bring them presents on Christmas day.  It is more than a little tragic that these poor little souls can have a moment so special as to meet someone they believe in, but that person is someone normal like you and I in disguise.

There were children one day long ago who came in the same way, but the One to whom they were to meet was the Son of God.  He was none other than the Christ, our Savior and the rightful ruler of the throne.  Mistaken men tried to stop them from coming, but Jesus said to let them come.  In fact, He practically told the disciples to drop their airs and get in line too.

It is refreshing to stop and consider the scene and the weight of importance this moment has. It shows what Jesus is like and what He wants from you and me.  His heart went out to these innocent little treasures.  Those precious tiny people were not concerned if His words were correctly adjusted to popular religion.  They did not come seeking some hidden agenda of their own.  They pressed close because they wanted to meet the most special person who ever walked on earth.  They wanted to be touched and for Him to include them in His prayers.

You and I may not remember when we ever felt like that, perhaps we do, but I am sure we don´t live moments like those in the same way.  But that is just what the Lord asked of us.

Jesus said that His kingdom belongs to people who receive Him in this way.  Our Lord wants us to sense the excitement and wonder over getting to meet Him.  He wants us to hop up and down and press ever closer.  He wants us to leave all our maturity and grown-up coolness over our situations and give way to the desire of His touch.  We should want to feel again as little children, what it is like to meet that One incredibly wonderful person who can in all actuality provide all kinds of miraculous things for us in our lives.

Our Savior is not wearing a costume.  He is not checking His watch and looking forward to His next break.  He says, ¨Bring those precious, loving little ones to Me!¨ (and He is referring to you and me!)

Dear Jesus, thank You for not making our coming to You to be a rough path with a lot of suffering and rules.  Thank You for opening Your arms to receive our humble, childlike trust and desire.  There is much that we still need to learn about LIFE in Your kingdom, but if You take us up on Your knee, there we can listen and there we can learn.  Please remind us often, to turn from our grown-up tendencies to complicate and water-down the act of approaching You.  Let us feel again that uncontrollable and overwhelming sensation of drawing near to Your presence.  Let us be children again in this respect so that we hear You say, ¨Let them come,¨ and know that You are talking about us.  Then we can be with You and You can touch us and pray over us too.

Give us that hope and that faith today, we pray.

Amen
