But seeing the marvels that he did, and the children shouting ¨Hosanna to the Son of David¨ in the temple precinct, the chief priests and the scribes took offense. Matthew 21: 15 (Byington)

It is sad to say that not all religious people are completely tuned to the heart of Jesus. Religion is supposed to be human beings looking up unto God in reverence and awe. We who stand on the side of God are supposed to be concerned and tuned to what He is doing and appreciative of all that He does. Yet when the religious leaders of Jesus´ day saw the wonderful things being done among them, their first thought was not towards God.
The various translations of the bible read with words like, ¨they took offense¨, ¨they were indignant,¨ or ¨they were sore displeased.¨ It seems that instead of marveling at the workings of God and how He was moving powerfully amongst them, they preferred to get upset that their neat little rituals and way of running things was being disrupted.
For us today, we tend to stand outside of the question and leave the scribes holding all the blame. We would like to think that we don´t carry the same attitude as they did. This little story of the Bible was not intended to instruct me, it is there to show how some other person was wrong about Jesus.
Jesus brings our attention to the little children who could not contain their excitement. He points out that their form of praise was the better one.
Read Matthew 21:12-17
Perhaps we could take a moment to examine ourselves. Are we really opening our eyes to the wonderful movements of the mighty arm of the Lord? Have we let our attention turn to disruptions or threats to our way of worship or beliefs held? Or are we running around the halls of the temple shouting out our excitement and praise?
Dear Jesus, let us accept any instruction that comes from You. Let us open our ears and our hearts to the point that when You say that there are some who do You honor, that we are moved to learn and imitate. Let us be like those little ones who could not contain all that we are witnessing and the wonder of You that is revealed to us. Change our scribe-like hearts from our cynical and skeptical views and give us that child-like wonder and praise. And may Your name be heard ringing from the rafters of heaven today.
Amen
