But Jesus answered them ¨I tell you verily, if you have faith and do not doubt you will not only do this of the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain ´Be lifted up and thrown into the sea´ it will be done.¨ Matthew 21:21 (Byington)
Jesus did some marvelous and amazing things while He was walking amongst us in the flesh. It would be sad not to recognize this or to share the fact with other people. In fact, you find Jesus encouraging us to open ourselves to the possibility of seeing the same things happening around us as well.
We are talking about miracles. What is a miracle? A miracle is when the natural world we live in or the natural way of things is disrupted or altered. Something changes the way things work here on earth and we find that the Divine has the power and actually does adjust things as they see fit or when there is sufficient desire to do so.
The Christian is peculiar in the aspect that we have placed our faith in God above. We believe that there is design and purpose to our planet and the entire human race. The bottom line is that there is an inconceivably great and intelligent being that planned, formed, cares for and maintains all things. All things that we sense with our five senses were also created and controlled by this being.
It should be no stretch for us at all to understand that a being with such capabilities as the powers needed to form and control what we see, should also be able to move or change things as He sees fit. He made the rules like the law of gravity. If He should say one day, that the power of gravity will not affect a certain item, that for that item gravity will no longer hold it down.
Miracles stem from this fact about our Creator. Here the created being in our created habitat meets the Creator on His terms. There is an encounter perhaps and the creator says, ¨Look, now that you have cared to look away from yourself and your environment and stretch your eyes to see into My realm, I will show you a little of how all things bow to Me.¨ Then magic happens! Something we knew to be one way is now another.
This kind of thing is to be expected when we stop groveling in our lower, created system of things and begin the lofty pursuit of seeking the higher dwelling. The deeper we dig into the mysteries of the Godhead, (as long as that search is after the Creator and Redeemer Jesus Christ), the more wonderful surprises are in store for us.
In Matthew 21:18-22, we find this story of Jesus and the fig tree. When the disciples were surprised at this expression of power and altering of our reality, Jesus pointed out that these miracles are directly connected to faith, prayer and the absence of doubt in the ability of God.
Our common mistake is to look at the material. We focus our attention on the physical. We look at what is being altered. This is a mistake. The focus is always and should always be upon God Himself. It is His power, His will and His expression and in the end whatever happens should serve to direct attention again unto Him.
Therefore, when Jesus encourages us forward to look for these miracles happening for us, let us not turn things around and look to the magic. Magic will for sure happen for the one who truly seeks the glory of the Lord, but any and all miracles are rewards for the pure intentions of reaching upward in faith.
Dear Jesus, we would pray for a miracle today. Grant this one wish to those of us bold enough to ask it. Remove our doubting hearts and miraculously place within us a heart to seek You above all. Then open our eyes to see Your wonderful works all around us.
Amen
