Who´s Son is He?

¨What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?¨They said to him: ¨David´s.¨  Matthew 22:42 (Reference Bible)

Jesus takes the opportunity to turn our attention to who actually is the Christ.  His question was put to men who knew the Scriptures extremely well.  They knew how to read into the words they found there and spent their days disputing it.  However, when Jesus pressed them on the issue, they could not respond to Him.

Read Matthew 22 verses 41 to 46.

Many of us today feel like we are more prepared to answer.  Our own studies have built upon those of old and countless more resources to the point where we should be safe in thinking that we got most of the issues all figured out.

But where was Jesus going with His questioning that day?  There should be a simple answer and nearly everyone should be able to give a sufficient response, shouldn´t we?

Jesus´s question bridged many deep facets of our faith in God and the Messiah.  Was He from man or from God?  How is it possible to match mortal and Divine.  What things are possible in spiritual realms?  Why do we think creator can become created?  It seems the more we look at the questions, the less answers we can come up with.  Or to explain them we would spend countless time splitting hairs verbally until we lost the train of thought completely.

Many books have been written and this is where theologian have found their life´s work in trying to lay it all out for us.  But Jesus´ words have always gone out to the simple at heart.  He was never interested in calling only the finest of minds, but you and I who have realized our short-comings and turn our eyes upward for answers.

There have been some throughout all the ages who threw up their hands, fell down to their knees and said; ¨Lord, I do not see, help me!  Then they stepped out on faith alone.  They rested on the fact that God had said something and that was good enough for them.  They may have had a faint notion or thought they knew where the Lord was coming from, but the final word they were happy to say, belonged to God in heaven.

What we fail to do so many times is to separate the powers or importance of man and that of God.  We make much of mere human beings and their abilities and therefore take away that separation that God has said existed between us and Him.  Sometimes the best we can do and the reaction the Lord would expect from us is to notice our smallness and His greatness.

Perhaps the biggest leap forward in spiritual realms would be for you and me an actual step backward.  Instead of putting our best foot forward, to realize that in ourselves we cannot.  In humbling ourselves and accepting God´s declaration of our insufficiencies, we find our only hope for leaning on and depending on God in actuality.  He draws and sustains those who have discovered their need for Him.

All the rest of us who would boast or allow ourselves the sensation of confidence in anything originating from mankind, will in the end only find ourselves disillusioned and deceived.  God is infinitely greater than all our wildest imaginings and His works are likewise in power and in essence.

Dear Lord, please help us to lift up our eyes and our hearts in wonder after You.  You work in powerful ways that leave us without explanation or words to express.  Please help us  to see our limitations and to celebrate the fact that our God is so big that we cannot wrap Him up in words and explain away His wonder and might.  Be pleased to find that there are still some who would hold to the fact that You are bigger than our capabilities of understanding and explanation.

And may we sing Your praises forever and ever.

Amen
