¨For I tell you, you shall not see me from henceforth until you say ´Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord.´¨ Matthew 23:39 (Reference Bible)
One could teach many wonderful truths buried like gems within the last three verses of Matthew 23. Like the thought of Jesus looking over His people like a mother hen or perhaps the mentioning of the fact that He was present viewing the scene over the years of Jerusalem´s rocky history. There is too is the hint towards the darkness one must pass to reach the point where they need a personal savior and also a light shining towards Jesus´ return.
However the message which might be underlying and hidden below the surface until sufficient attention is brought to it, could be the Lord´s mention that He would not be seen.
The Christian is a special person because supposedly he or she has discovered his or her need for and the existence of our Savior Jesus Christ. The sinner or wayward worldly person is a sad case because they have not yet realized this fact. Unfortunate and tragic is the thought of a person who is resists the idea that there is an intelligent and loving God who formed us and our environment where we dwell. But if we stop to consider, maybe the most terrifying thought might be that those who have seen and have heard, could have their treasure taken away from them.
Jesus told the Jews that the day would surely come where they would not see Him. One man may take this to mean one thing while another man makes it into something else. The bottom line is that the blessed presence is hidden in some form from them all. This may not seem to bother some who are self-assured confident and brazen, but to a heart-stricken child of the kingdom, this is a terrifying event indeed.
To the soul who desires nothing more or nothing less than feeding constantly and being increasingly closer to its precious Savior, no removal or reduction of their treasure will do. You may say that this is just the way it is supposed to be and it will be so only for a time, but to this kind of Christian those words will not suffice. This sort of stricken seeker of Jesus will go running to his or her knees. They will press their nose further in the scriptures and pray even harder for the finding and revealing of their heart´s desire.
On the other hand, we have those to whom Jesus´ words went out. These are the ones who did not and do not listen to the messengers of God or of Christ himself. These are the inhabitants of the city which should have been God´s own, but make that anything but His living and eternal kingdom. These are those who have preferred their own ideas and not stressed over the question of whether or not Jesus would be with them in every given moment.
Dear Jesus, few we may be, but there are some still who cannot bear those words that we would not see You. Even if it would be so, we will still strain and seek and pray for Your blessed presence with us. Even if our earthly eyes cannot see You shining before us, there will be nothing we could want more. Please enable our efforts and our strength. Give us perseverance and guidance to drive on hard at Your heels. Let our tortured hearts settle for nothing less than the treasure we seek in You.
In Your name and for Your glory we pray,
Amen
