Destroying the Temple

And He answered them ¨You see all this, do you not? I tell you verily, there shall not be one stone left upon another here that shall not be torn down.¨ Matthew 24:2 (Byington)

The words Jesus spoke as His disciples showed Him the wonderful buildings of the temple in Jerusalem would one day be used against Him as men tried to have their way instead of His. But those men who accused Him had their hearts far removed from seeking the true will of the Father.  They were religious men but they had never given their God the last word.

Men and women have had this problem since the dawn of creation.  Some people never give God much thought at all.  Others go so far as to give God the first word.  This would include the Jews, the Pharisees and even many of us Christians of today.  Even the Disciples who followed Jesus that day and heard His words perhaps did not stop to wonder where their Lord was going with His discourse.

However, if God is an infinitely superior being and Jesus is His Son and the heir to the throne, and then His words go far beyond the first and easiest interpretation.

Jesus had only a short time to walk on earth as a human to demonstrate and instruct us on the importance and mysteries of our existence here.  He might have spoken about some buildings that the people could see, but His words were working on a far deeper level.  Christ was directing our attention and our hearts towards spiritual and eternal things.

¨You see all these things?¨  He says, but Jesus is not talking about the temple that the people were showing Him.  This is a very important point to learn about our Savior.  This fact about Jesus and His words should be one of the first things we learn about Him.  It should be remembered often and used by us all, to drive our hearts further in our search of having Him inside of us.

Those of us who would call ourselves by His name, those who wear the name of Christians, need to learn not to take Jesus for His first word.  We should cultivate the art of lifting up the words and teachings of our Savior.  When we sense His leading or instructing, we should lean even harder upon Him until His revelation and His meaning is revealed to us.

We cannot afford to settle with a comfortable or easy translation or interpretation.  Jesus is working forever on His spiritual plans.  His intentions are not towards cold buildings of stones but the hearts and souls of beings.  He is concerned about eternal and amazing things and for all our limited sight; we will never change His intended outcome.

Dear Jesus, please aid us in learning of You.  Show us how to seek to understand the direction in which You would lead us.  Let us resist our tendency to take the first understanding of something and by doing so, miss the instruction You lay out for us.  Teach us to lean more on You, press harder always for further enlightenment.  As long as we are in the flesh and our eyes have not been opened to see Your shinning kingdom, let us lift up our hearts and souls to You.  Be pleased that even if we cannot yet see or do not yet know all the depth of your words, that in holding them back up to You, You may be glorified.  If we are this connected and dependent upon You, then we need not miss the point because we are looking at the Source to put Your definition upon it.

In Your name we pray,

Amen
