¨Then the king will say to those on his right, ´Come, you who have been blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the founding of the world.´¨ Matthew 25:34 (Reference Bible)
What a marvelous description of that future day to which we prepare and await with such longing. Jesus will come and set up His kingdom, but He describes here how those worthy will be separated from the unworthy and each will receive the inheritance they chose. But far more than giving us hope for this certain and pending event, Our Savior gives us light into what kind of people will be those chosen to enter that wonderful realm.
It is more than a coincidence to note that the different types of people were not divided according to geographical, ethical or racial groups. They are divided by things that separate them by nature. One group is said to have cared for their Lord completely unaware that they were doing so. The other group however, was of a different nature entirely and did things looking after their own interests. They too were unaware that in not choosing to care more about others, they were demonstrating that there was nothing of God in them.
Two types of people we have and two opposite ways of viewing life. One kind of person is here to serve and to care, the other to take and hoard.
The story Jesus tells is black and white. He goes no further nor dives into deep theology. We who hold value to His words and have set our hearts to seek Him and love Him, would do well to make more of this story instead of brush past it lightly. We could easily look past and drive forward as we usually do to make a lot of our religion and professed beliefs, or we could humble ourselves and examine our hearts.
Where do we fit? Deep within our hearts, where we cannot deceive ourselves, who are we really concerned with? Are we taking care of ourselves, or are we looking after those needy children of the Lord. If we have felt the burden to care for those around us, then it may follow that our hearts have been touched by our Lord and we serve Him as we serve those around.
Dear Lord in heaven, please see your servants here today. Fill our hearts with a love and a pressure inside to look after, to help and to care for your needy people. If we could find something of You, then it would fill us and move us in compassion towards them. Touch us now while there is still time and teach us to be the kind of people who have the kind of heart You have. Take away we pray, that old heart we had that looked after its own and cared not for others. We would choose to be filled with a nature like yours so that You will recognize us on that day.
Amen
