But Peter, in answer, said to him; ¨Although all the others are stumbled in connection with you, never will I be stumbled!¨ Matthew 26:33 (Reference Bible)
Nobody would like to think that they would deny or disown Jesus. We would be like Peter and say that even if everyone else does that, we would hold firm. We love Jesus and could not bear to abandon Him in any way.
Unfortunately however, we often do. Peter did too. Perhaps the question lies not in the fact that we are susceptible to it, but what we do when we become aware of our treason. How many of us hold against Peter what he did that night. We may secretly judge him, but because we can see how he repented and went on to dedicate the rest of his life to serving his Lord, his momentary slight hardly taints our respect for him.
You and I are in the same boat. We fall under similar situations where Jesus expects something of us, and due to our earthly tendencies, we fall into moments where we do not uphold Him as we should. It is sad that this happens, but it will be to our credit when we realize we have let the Lord down, that we go running to Him.
Hopefully our failures will serve to steel ourselves in Him and keep us from further straying. With a little effort on our part, we could look past the normal responses and edge ourselves closer to Him.
Dear Jesus, we are sorry that we haven’t always stayed by Your side. We are like the Disciples who fled that night. We even are like Peter sometimes when we say that we will never leave You or forsake You, but we do. Please forgive us and those tendencies of our earthly nature. One thing we do pray for is that when You do show us our treason that we fall before You and lean harder upon You. Let us come, teach us true repentance. Then pick us up and strengthen us so that we are less likely to leave Your side again.
Amen
