Jesus Falls On His Face

And going a little way forward, he fell upon his face, praying and saying: ¨My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass away from me. Yet, not as I will, but as you will.¨  Matthew 26:39 (Reference Bible)

How great the pressure must have been for our Savior that night in the garden of Gethsemane?  That night Jesus carried the burden of our sins, our stubbornness and our failures to open ourselves to following God in all honesty.  All the expressions of Love God has tried to make us aware of since the dawn of creation, that night Christ had to deal with the thought of whether or not more suffering was really worth it.

Have you had a moments in your life which you felt you could not go any further?  Have you ever been where all your problems brought you to a standstill?  Have you ever fallen so hard that you didn´t think you had the strength to pick yourself up?

Jesus has been there.

Our Savior felt like you and I and our suffering cannot compare to what He went through.  Somehow that night He had to get the consent of His heart to actually go through with paying for our failures with His own life.  It was what He had come to do.  He was born for this very reason, but He still needed to go through the test of carrying out the will of the Father.

Jesus could not turn even to His closest and most trusted companions.  He asked for their assistance and prayers but they were sleeping on the job.  In moments like these, the only place we can go is to our knees.  When we fall on our faces in our own Gardens of Gethsemane, we can turn to the Lord.  We have Jesus there too.  He went before us and He led the way.  He turned to God the Father and He acted out of love.

That night Jesus prayed the perfect kind of prayer.  He said, ¨Not my will Father, but Yours!¨  Jesus came to the conclusion to continue in love and trust that God´s will for Him was all He needed.  He actually placed all His troubles in the Father´s hands and stepped out in Faith.  His earthly body didn´t think it could drink the cup it had before it.  But for Jesus, it was enough that He was doing what His Father wanted and knew needed to be done.

We too, in our moment of despair, will be brought to that moment.  We too will experience times where we can make the same choice.  Our problems will be real and threaten us to the point of death.  But if we follow our Savior and trust in the only One who will be by our side, we can place our burden in those same capable hands.

Dear Jesus, thank you for the sacrifice You made in suffering for us.  We are guilty of our lack of faithfulness to God but You weren´t.  Yet You went through with it all, out of the love You have for us.  Please let Your Spirit be in us too and move us to follow Your lead.  When times get tough, let us bring it all to the Lord.  Let us place the final say in the hands of God.  Let us trust that what the Lord has for us to drink, may be necessary.  You see and You know, and we would rather suffer like our Savior did before, only to know that we too have placed our faith in the will of God.  So then Dear Lord, Your will be done, and not ours!

Amen
