And he cured many who were ill with various diseases, and expelled many demons, and would not let the demons speak, because they knew him. Mark 1:34 (Byington)
One may get a warm feeling when considering the mystery of angels. But what sensation comes over us when we talk of demons?
Even in religious circles today one may feel strange venturing to speak on the subject. Modern technology and scientific research would combat even our own resolve and limit the conversation and who we could discuss with.
However, those who look to the Bible will find sufficient mention to give weight to Jesus´ actions and teaching on the subject. We cannot see these workers after evil, but the results of their work is found all around us. While no one wouldshould get too carried away with the study of them, at least we should have a healthy solid base and accept what we learn about them in the scriptures.
Part of Jesus´ healings and ministry was just this. Jesus healed people who were suffering under the oppression of these devious workers. We get the point that they are intellectual creatures in that they were aware of things which were happening in our universe that we ourselves have only been told about. They knew Jesus. They knew He was the Son of God and they could see that He was here and that it posed a threat to their devious work.
Like darkness retreats before light, they could stand within the presence of Jesus only as He permitted them. If He told them to go away, they had to obey. Jesus has this kind of authority. When Jesus did not want them to make too much over Who He was, Jesus did not allow them to speak. Some of them managed to mention a little something before Jesus stopped them but this just served to foreshadow what would come to light after His death.
So before we dive into a heated discussion over what each man holds true about these spiritual beings, let us rather focus on the fact that there is more to life than what we see on the surface. Let us lift up our souls to Jesus and place our faith in the One who can see clearly and has authority to place limitations upon all of the darker workings.
Dear Jesus, We turn to You today not to say we understand everything or grab for ourselves any say or power. We turn to You because we realize, along with the workers of evil, that You have authority on earth. We cannot see all that may befall us nor always recognize when deceit and darkness may be entering our hearts. Therefore we turn ever more sincerely to You. Please draw your little flock closer to You because we are only safe when we are with You. On our own we may find ourselves open for any unseen attack. Take us, lead us and fill us so much with Your presence that the darkness flees before Your Light.
Amen
