But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” Mark 2:10-11 (NIV)

Every person alive along with all those who went before us has had to deal with their own question of morality. From a very early age we start to put to the test where the limits are with right and wrong and how we feel about pushing those limits. We could simplify much and say that sin is rooted in man´s choosing anything that is outside of the will of God. However you choose to look at it, the problem of standing up to our sins is excruciatingly real to the honest thinker. The scribes were astonished when Jesus spoke of the ability to wipe away transgressions.
Kierkegaard held that there were different spheres or levels where the human being could live in relation to God. The lowest level and the one where most everyone lives is the aesthetic life. This is where people are completely wrapped up in the external world around them. Here we are the deciding factor and think, respond and weigh everything upon our senses. Our desires, theories, and impulses of our earthly nature are constantly concerned with what we have learned from the natural world and experiences around us. Even our religion is dealt with at this level, and we only need to look around us for evidence.
To progress past this lowland of spiritual development where we live, we should consider further our own morality at this level. For growth to occur and for us to draw nearer to God, we must face the music and bring ourselves to the light.
Sin as seen by many is breaking rules set by another external Entity which we are taught we should be obeying. The natural human being and even most Christians live their lives with this weight of their transgressions lying firmly upon their shoulders. But that Person whom they have offended is a remote vague Figure. We who are honest will recognize guilt but need to go past a cold and distant concept of an authority somewhere out there in space.
This process of coming before God is in no way distant or theoretical. Each individual must live through it personally. You and I must remove the external and shallow worldly way of viewing our standing with God. We must actually place ourselves before Him. It will kill us to do it, but only those who go that far will ever truly have life. Sin cannot stand in the presence of the Almighty and we will be completely aware of our impurity when standing in the light of God´s radiance.
Dear Jesus, it is terrifying but we must be brought before the Father today. We cannot hope to stand so please come with us. Do not remove us from the light of His righteousness. Rather let it burn our dissention from us. Previously we looked to ourselves and to all of ways of the world around us. We served our own thoughts and desires and we tried to make salvation and God above bow to our estimation of them. But now we come to be judged, and the fallen nature inside of us condemned to death. We turn from us to You. It is the only way we will ever know peace. Adjust us as You see fit, and let the end result be one that brings glory and honor to Your name.
Amen
