Putting Down the Holy Spirit

“However, whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit has no forgiveness forever, but is guilty of everlasting sin.”  Mark 3:29 (Reference Bible)

These are not times to be speaking loudly about spirits.  History has recorded many horrible atrocities committed by spiritualist and the common man´s dealings with such people.  It is a subject that is not far from anyone, but not to have more burnings at the stake we have safely categorized it to keep us from danger.  People still consider the existence of the spiritual world but a great effort has been made to hide it in a cloud of artificiality.  Science and modern education have been unable to prove the existence or detect it in any way, so for the most part it has been handed over to the novelist or to Hollywood.

With the amazing tricks of media the entire realm of spiritual things is effectually turned into wisps of smoke that vanish at any attempt to touch them.  It would take super-human strength of will to step beyond what barriers are formed in the minds of people today to show them the workings and the reality of a world just beyond our sight.

Even inside the field planted by our Lord, it seems many weeds have grown in and would choke the growth of God´s spiritually concerned children.  We may read clearly all the many references Jesus and the prophets made concerning God´s glorious kingdom shining just past our powers of perception, but somehow many people do not take it seriously or hold the belief loosely like some storybook rhyme which sounds good to them but is no more than a distant misty fantasy.

Jesus spoke directly about things that were going on there outside our senses abilities to detect.  He talked about personages and organizations of the forces of right and wrong.  He taught us as only One who had been there and seen those things could.  He spoke of the Spirit of God and tried to help us understand that it was not a thing which we could take lightly.  Nobody anywhere should ever dare to scoff at the thought of the Holy Spirit or throw it around as they please.

We are talking about something which comes wrapped in the same package as God the Father.  Whatever your take on the Holy Spirit may be, no one should ever try to drag it down lower.  We are who live on earth know of our mortal quality.  Yet Jesus came speaking and demonstrating that even though we could not see it, for Him, His Father and the Holy Spirit, these and many other limitations did not exist.

That we are talking about things which we cannot see may prevent many from attempting to embrace the Lord and His Spirit.  It would be all too easy to give in to our times, ways of thought and teachings that we find all around.  But still, Jesus´ words come to us as a light in the dark.  For those who will, we can look upward.  We can recognize the weight of the argument placed before us but choose not to reduce or lower that Great Spirit in any way.  It will be a step of faith, but some will dare to take it.

Dear Jesus, there is so much which we cannot see.  There is still so much for us to learn.  Do not let our lack of sight or our lack of faith hinder us from spiritual growth.  We have heard and our hearts leapt at the thought of Your kingdom.  You encouraged us to believe in a wonderful and Great Spirit of God and we would not like to let You down.  Please enable us to embrace the thought of that blessed Spirit which we yet may not see.  Guard us we pray from what the world would have us do so that we do not put that Spirit down. But rather teach us to love, cherish, seek and need Your Spirit more and more each day.

Amen
