He said this because they were saying, “He has an impure spirit.” Mark 3:30 (NIV)
Jesus had been accused of doing what He did by the power of Beelzebub. He turned things around on them and exposed the fact that the Devil worked towards his causes using the spirit of darkness, but Jesus deliberately worked towards completely higher objectives and this was done by a greater and the most Holy of Spirits. Carefully He warned against the insulting and lowering of this wonderful Spirit of God which directed men and women to look upwards in awe to the Most High God.
However correctly we may hold to the belief in this Great Spirit of Truth, we may do well to elaborate more and each dive deeper into this pool of understanding. Jesus along with all the Sacred Scripture refers often and much about this Mysterious Directed Force called the Holy Spirit. It is referred to in many ways and the theologians have their work cut out for them in trying to define it. But rather than have a clear-cut definition, we would search for a relative benefit for you and I today. What can the Holy Spirit mean to us in how we live, move and worship in our lifetime?
First of all we should look at what the function is. If we are completely ignorant of origin, consistency or theory, it matters little. But what it does for us and what purpose it serves is eternally vital. The Holy Spirit, no matter how you look at Him, lifts up and points us to the Father and the Son. Anything that serves to do that should be sought out and embraced with our entire enthusiasm and will.
It might help to consider the contrary forces. The teachers of religion in Jesus´ day had accused Jesus of using the powers of evil, but those forces point men and women in completely the other direction. Contrary to the work of the Holy Spirit, dark spirits would point us in any direction other than to bow personally before God and His Son Jesus Christ. They would have us look at ourselves, each other, and even dive us into a lengthy dispute of theory or practice. But the objective would always be to have us looking in another direction and not leaning upon nor focusing upon the Lord.
It is with great fear and trembling with which we approach this point of Truth. Let no man reduce the importance of the Holy Spirit. It is a vital force which is necessary to draw us safely and healthily towards Jesus and the Father. What is of utmost importance is that we work in all honesty each one beyond his or her own ability, along with this Spirit of Truth. Learn to feel His Presence, Need His council, heed to His whispering and draw ever closer to Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Father in living experience. Failure to do this will leave us fatefully far from whom we would be standing with on that coming day.
Dear Jesus, please send us the Spirit of Truth. Send a double portion of Your Holy Spirit, to comfort and to guide us today. Let us refuse to think, act or speak without His mighty influence upon us. Help us to honestly seek out His voice and yield to His mysterious urgings. He will be the One who directs us ever closer and ever truly to You. If You would be the breath we take to live, the Holy Spirit will be the force that helps us take that breath. May the Spirit be embraced, loved and glorified as Your seekers discover His benefits today.
Amen
