The Sower

Harken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow:  Mark 4:3 (KJV)

The parable of the sower and his seed is repeated often and remembered well within the flock of God´s sheep here on earth.  We hear sermons regularly, read it in our studies and refer to it many times.  The disciples of Jesus were rewarded a little more than the rest of the hearers when they were alone and gathered close.  Jesus explained to them that many of the things that God would want to tell us, are reserved only for those who prove they want to learn.

When we mention this we don´t mean that curiosity that comes from not knowing a secret.  Most everyone would want to know that extra bit of information if they knew that there was a secret being held from their knowledge.  But this doesn´t always happen when we are talking about spiritual things.  If you tell someone that there is a secret recipe or a surprise waiting for them, then their attention and curiosity is sparked.  But if you tell someone that there are wonderful things to learn about God and His plan for us, not everyone is interested enough to press forward to seek out what lies deeper beneath the exposed surface.

Perhaps we think we know it all.  We understood the story in the first place so now there is no real surprise left for us to find by further inquiry.  This is a bit tragic; when we consider that there are no limits when we are talking about an infinite God like ours?

We might not be the most learned or well-studied individuals upon the planet, but we can be among those who press close to Jesus and show an interest in what still lies to be discovered to those who listen.  The parable was told, explained further, but still the precious gems of delightful discovery are brought to those who look upwards for more enlightenment.

One such discovery is the mention of the Sower. Within the host of interpretations one could place upon Who and what that is, it always comes back to God somehow.  It is a benevolent source which intelligently and deliberately takes action towards a certain outcome or conclusion.  It is always coming from God and directed at reaping a harvest within our souls.  We may benefit, but the glory and reward is ultimately to God from which it came and serves perfectly His purposes.

Our natural fallen tendency is to make all things relate to us or lift us up somehow.  But we are taught in the scriptures that the intended Way is just the opposite.  All things relate to the Sower and will and should serve to lift Him up and please Him in the end.  Those secrets of the kingdom of heaven are given to those who see this and hear this and desire nothing less.

Dear Jesus, receive us as we press closer to You.  We come to learn the secrets of Your kingdom.  You mentioned One who planted seeds so that a harvest would come.  We would not want to reduce any possibility of the fullest crop for the One who deserves all that should return to Him.  We are aware of our limitations and therefore pray for assistance in guarding against the dangers that stand to threaten the reaping of 100% within our hearts.  Reveal unto us as You see fit, those secrets of Your kingdom.  But do so only as you see that we truly seek to know them.  Most of all, place upon our hearts the joy of knowing the One Who sowed seeds for a harvest and Who will reap it to His Own Glory,

Amen
