So he was able to do no powerful work there except to lay his hands upon a few sickly ones and cure them. Mark 6:5 (Reference)
Jesus came to earth on a mission. He was sent by Divine intention and purposefully directed. Our God designed a great plan and Jesus was here to carry it out. He has His work cut out for Him. There was nothing light or frivolous about the work Jesus came to do. Perhaps an eternity of discovery will not uncover all of what He was actually accomplishing for us.
What we might consider as up-building and healthy medicine is what limited the power of the workings of an Almighty God. What? That must be a contradiction of terms! And it is! However there are many paradoxes we find as we search the unsearchable riches and wonders of God. So with a heart after Him, and an eye for anything that would throw us further upon Him for understanding and building faith, we press forward even if full definition must await Divine help.
One of the first things we must learn if we would approach the unapproachable is that no matter how clever we think we are; only God can reveal Himself to those He deems worthy of knowing Him. The fear of God will always be the beginning of knowledge but it is a beginning none-the-less. Awareness and closeness to God unleashes forces greater than any of the forces in nature that we are able to perceive. Therefore it is just and correct of the Lord to share that power with only those who will not attempt to use it foolishly.
Like an atomic bomb in the hands of a reckless fool, the misuse of heavenly power has caused a world of hurt to the nations throughout history. Many a terrible crime has been committed in the name of God. But let us return our attention to Jesus. Let us look at what might stand in the way of His ability to work freely among His lost lambs of the earth.
Jesus returned to His home area and the people there would just not accept that God could or would use a person they knew to work His wonders. They preferred to look to whatever other conclusion they could find in their hardened hearts. It was too difficult for them to believe that the Lord was actually moving among them. It was this very lack of faith that made them unworthy of experiencing any further revelation of the might and love of God above.
So we find this paradox. The Almighty, All-Powerful God is found in a situation where nobody really wants to know about His love or anything He would have to do with us. Therefore, being a just God and righteous in all His ways, He will not stoop to forcing any unwilling soul to see wonderful treasures that they just don´t want to see. Like an arranged or forced wedding is seldom a breeding ground for love and passion, our Lord will not let Himself press anyone into an intimate relationship with Him that is forever binding.
Dear Jesus, as You sit at the Father´s side, please intercede for Your poor people. The proud have chosen their strength, but it will be Your grace that will help the helpless. So, allow us to feel undone when we consider Your ways. Let us lean upon You further and admit that we do not already know all the wonders You would show unto those You find worthy. Rather let us pray for more healing each day. Let us burn for our need of You in all things. Continue to do Your miraculous work in us as You find simple believing souls who refuse to reject a hope in You. Let us in no way limit Your power to work miracles and wonders within our hearts and in our lives today.
Amen
