What the Voice Says

Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love.  Listen to him!”  Mark 9:7 (TNIV)

Here we find ourselves with Peter, James and John.  The sky is hidden from us as a great cloud envelops us.  There is an overwhelming sense of a Presence as all else is closed off from us.  We are there Jesus.  Out of the swirling mist booms a “Voice” that pierces our souls.  We cannot place where the “Voice” comes from.  It comes from the cloud but it seems to come from all around.  We were scared, but we were not prepared for this.  This “Voice” is like nothing we have ever heard.  Is it a whisper?  How can it be?  It is booming in our ears and overcomes us.  All at once it is crushing yet uplifting, it is sweet yet terrifying.  The “Voice” is too much to take in.  But our very souls cry out for more.

The “Voice” of God tells us in few words of His Son.  It tells us the Father loves Him.  It gives approval and asks us to give ours as well.  The “Voice” asks us to listen to Jesus.

One may not know just how many different views there are today on who Jesus is.  All we need to do though is put people to the question.  We will surely be surprised by the unbelievable amount of varied and contradicting answers.  Read up on one of the chats online on the subject.  Everyone seems to have an opinion and not all agree.  People are eager to give their take on who He is.  Some will say who He is for them.

Religions vary too.  Denominations will stand or fall on their teachings of who Jesus is.  All are completely convinced. Many base their interpretations of favored texts of scripture. Jesus Himself was persecuted and eventually killed because of Who He claimed to be.  How can it be that a human can claim to be the Son of God?

Before we start a riot and each get fired up about defending our views.  Let us listen a moment to that “Voice.”  Let it sink in below the surface of our brain where the cerebral work is being done.  Let the “Voice” penetrate to the very core of our being.  Let the “Voice” wash over our heart and soul.  What reaction does it have there?  What sensation comes over us as we listen to the words that the “Voice” speaks to our hearts?

The cloud and the wonders that we are witnessing are impressive indeed.  The moment is extremely moving.  We are shaken to the very core at what is happening.  But it is this “Voice” that leaves us without foothold.  We fall to our knees as we cannot contain all that comes to our senses.  The power and weight of the moment overcomes us.  Who can stand in the presence of God?  Who is valiant enough to hear those words?  The words are beautiful yet the burn deep until they consume us.  What do they tell our heart?

Dear Jesus, we each press forward on our walk with You.  Aid our souls in finding You.  Our hearts sensed the importance and the need for You.  But this booming “Voice” testifies.  The Father directs us to You.  We are left without reserve.  We need You.  We need to hear You.  Our hearts go out to You as does that of the Father.  You are there with Your Father.  Work Your wonders so that power and understanding are given to us today.  Send us faith.  Let us draw nearer still to You.  You please Your Father and by Your side we too will stand in His favor.  Take our hands we pray. Take our hearts.  Take our very lives.  Lead on dear Lord. Lead on!

Amen
