Making Preparations

On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”  Mark 14:12 (NIV)

The time has come upon them.  It is time to celebrate their ritual dinner as customary.  But there is still a lot to do.  They need to find a place that will hold them all.  They need to accommodate the hall.  They need to get all the other details arranged.  There is so much to do so that the Master has His event.

Jesus doesn´t sound worried or stressed about all that needs to be done this first day of the Passover.  His Disciples ask Him how He wants them to go about the preparations.  Have they left it a little late?  But our Teacher sends us on a small mission of faith.  He sends His followers into town.  He tells us what and who we will find.  He tells us where to go and who to talk to.  And do we find that the words of our Savior come true?  Do we find everything just as He says it will be?  Do we find that the Lord has already mysteriously been preparing for this day?  Do we find that with only a little faith on our part, God has planned and prepared something even better than what we might have organized on our own efforts?

Isn´t this just like our Lord?  Do we find Him always at work just beyond what we are able to perceive?  So many times we struggle forward with our own idea of how things should work out.  We struggle to accomplish our goals.  We work hard, slave away and even fight to make our dreams come true.  Then something happens and we find that things turn out in a way completely different than what we had expected.  Only the way the Lord has organized the outcome is better than what we had been struggling to attain.

Was there an old flame that we prayed we would end up with that couldn´t compare with the relationship we have now?  Is there a job or a work situation we had wanted before that wouldn´t have been as good for us as where the Lord has us now? Do we now have loved ones, family, or children that are more wonderful than what we would have dreamed we could have?  Can we see how the Lord is leading us?  Is it evident that His hand is at work?  Is God working in our lives?  Does He have everything under control?

We may see more clearly in hindsight.  But what about today?  What are we struggling with now?  Are we aware that the mission Jesus has set us upon is a small test of faith?  Even though we cannot see that He has the room and all the preparations already made, can we trust that things will work out the way the Father has designed?  Do we realize that our part in this scene is carrying our Lord´s wishes for us?  Do we know that our simple faith in Him is all that is needed for us to see wonderful things happening all around?  Do we trust Him that much?

Surely the Disciples were amazed that by following a man with a jar of water, they would find another person who had the upper room all ready for our Lord.  Do we have our eyes open to what wonders the Lord has prepared for us to see today?  Shall we ask Him, and then listen close to what He tells us?  Shall we step out on faith to do our Savior´s wishes?  Do we want to fuss over the preparations ourselves?  Or would we like to see what amazing thing He already has prepared for us?

Dear Jesus, help us to see what it is You ask of us today.  Give us the strength of faith to step out and do Your wishes.  Then prepare us to be blown away when we realize what wonderful things You have been preparing for us all along.

Amen
