Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are good, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are bad, your body also is full of darkness. See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. Luke 11:34-35 (NIV)
Jesus begins to talk about lamps. He says that nobody lights one then hides it away. He says lights are for sharing, serving a purpose and enlightening. Where is He going with this analogy? What is He trying to teach us? Is He forever encouraging us down a deep and intimate journey of soul? Is He drawing us close to Him as He guides us forward into understanding God and His Ways? Could we accept His outstretched hand? Will He gently but surely lead us to the Father?
Is it safe to say that our attention need not go to a physical lamp? Could we rest assured that our Savior was using the eye as an illustration? Where then would He be directing our attention? What is it that we have that is like an eye? What part of us serves the same function? Would our hearts also be an organ that serves a similar purpose? Is our soul something that we can use to detect our Creator? Could that vital part of our being which senses its God be something that could focus its attention where it is directed? Could we choose to see the things we want to with it? Could we try to focus our hearts on the Lord? Could we direct our spiritual sight towards God? Could it in this way be like the eye that Jesus is speaking of?
If we were to make our heart and soul, be what we are using to bring God into focus in our lives, would the Light of Jesus be essential? Would the Light which He provides help us to see more clearly the nearness of God? Could we choose to direct our hearts more and more fully on the Lord? Could we try not to focus so much attention on the lesser things that our hearts go out to? If we actually were to direct our center core completely to the Lord, would He finally begin to come into focus? If we focused that completely upon Him would our visions clear? Would He come into sight? Would He become all the more real as the light of Jesus illuminates Him?
Jesus encourages us to ensure that the light we think we have inside of us is not darkness. How do we do that? Would we first need to check if His light is shining within us? Would we need to see how genuinely close we are to Him? Would we actually need to be so close that His light was shining all around us? Would the warmth of that glow begin to allow us to focus our soul´s attention on God? Would sight be restored? Would darkness be dispersed? Could we draw near to Jesus today? Could we attempt to see by His light? Could we bask in the warmth of illumination He gives as we stand that close to Him? Would our hearts rejoice as the Father comes into the focus of our lives?
Dear Jesus, shine Your light inside of us today. Let us seek that Light. Let the illumination You bring when we are in Your company. Focus the eyes of our souls on You! Let everything else blur out of focus for us as we concentrate our hearts upon You. Be please to shine for us. Draw us close and keep us there. We do not want our vision to be filled with darkness. We do not want to deceive ourselves. We want to know that Your Light fills all our senses with the greatest focus of all, our Lord, our Father, and our God!
Amen
