Rungs On The Ladder

The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!”  He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.  Luke 17:5-6 (NIV)

How many rungs are there on the ladder that leads upward into Heaven?  Should we think there are few or many?  How many points should we hold as important to follow?  Do we think we can stand firm on just one or two truths?  Should we leave others as less important or think we can skip them?  Or are all the teachings of Jesus vitally important to us on our journey up to our Father´s arms?

Do we get a sensation that Jesus is touching on many different points in only a few short verses?  Would a quick mention reduce the importance of what the Saviour is trying to teach us?  Or could we look to see where the Spirit would lead us with them?  Might the Lord be mentioning them to remind us of their importance to us on our upward climb?  Could they be like rungs on a ladder which are necessary to us to grasp and to hold on to?  Can they work together to get us higher and bring us closer to God?  Do they all work to gain us a tighter bond with our Lord?  Do they strengthen our relationship to Him?

Does awareness of sin help us avoid further separation from God?  Does it rise us up a little higher to actively striving to care for those around us?  Does this resemble more the Spirit and nature of our Lord?  Does it move us in a way so as not to harm or mislead any of God´s children anywhere?  Does this attitude lift us up in love and help us forgive our brothers and sisters who stumble at our side?  Are we ever climbing higher and closer towards being like Jesus?  Does it bring us up to the lofty area of faith?  As we cling to this rung, are we more dependent still on the Lord?  Are we reaching heights now where our firm grip on Him is what holds us from falling?  Does it bolster our resolve to have a grip on One so powerful and caring?  Does our gained ground and nearness to God strengthen our souls so strongly, to the point where we might be able to say to a tree to plant itself in the sea?  Do these first rungs lift us up high enough that we become aware of our need for and duty towards our Maker?  Do they humble us and throw us further upon Him?  Are we so much nearer and our bond with Him so much stronger?  Has each step made our relationship with the Lord more real and more vital?

To get from one place on a ladder and reach higher, is each rung an important step?  As we rise up to each point do we get a sensation of nearing our lofty goal?  On this ladder of faith, do these rungs bring us closer and closer to the Presence of God?  Are we nearer in Spirit and in heart?  Does it make our relationship grow stronger and more important as we willingly make our effort to reach the greatest of all Goals?  Do we have to keep our eyes steadily on Him and our hearts set upon following Jesus up into our future Home?  Will our hearts soar always higher with each rung on this ladder towards God?

Dear Jesus, please lead us upward!  We have lifted our eyes into the heights and now we want to get close to the Lord.  Show us how to use each step and each rung of faith to rise ever closer to our God.  Strengthen our bond and our relationship as we keep our gaze fixed and strive for each next step upward.  Let our gained ground not be merely a special term but one of the heart and soul.  So as we near our Heavenly Goal, we reach unimaginable heights in relationship and closeness to our God today!

Amen
