It starts with a deep ache within. But soon, it builds. In no time, it is all that consumes us. One would love to think that this is our desire after the Lord. But often, it´s not. We burn for a lot of different things these days. Our imaginations run wild. Our hearts go out to so much. Yet sadly, few are there who will turn and seek the Lord. Few will give their hearts over to thirst after Him.
If, however, we could get the tiny seeds to sprout, it would be different. If we made a definitive choice, God could be ours. If we tasted of the Lord, then we might step out of the crowd. We would face the elements and deserted stretches. It will be lonely. We will be exposed. We will have to cross the desert wastelands of the soul. But our God would be before us. Our hope will drive us on.
We call ourselves Christians even before we know what it is like to thirst for Him. But if we want our walk with the Lord to turn into something substantial, we must learn what it is like to yearn after Him. We must seek Him until we find ourselves sipping our tiny piece of all He is. Then, prepare these hearts for thirst. We will finally realize that nothing will fill us like the presence of God. We will search the whole universe for more of Him. Let us pant after our Savior as the deer after the water brook.
As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants after you, God. Psalm 42:1
