There are a host of lesser things that tug on our souls. But there are few that we can call deep. The instinct for survival and certain forms of love can reach into what we could call deep. What a mother feels for the infant in her arms can be referred to as deep. The slice of cake we could not resist tasting would not.
When we consider religion, we find the whole scene much the same. There is a lot that goes on that we cannot call deep. Toying with our level of righteousness is often a battle for us to place more importance upon. Church attendance and setting aside time fluctuate. And our agreement on doctrinal issues can all blow around in the breeze. But there are some things that hold eternal and Divine importance. There is deep significance in the distance between our hearts and God.
If we were to stand close at the foot of a mighty waterfall, we would come face-to-face with its might. The roar would be deafening in our ears. Drops of water would soak us from the mist billowing up. A sense of the water´s force would humble and excite us deep within. So too, with God. If we could come close enough to Him, we would sense His all-powerful presence. If we entered His throne room, our frail structures would not be able to handle the weight of His glory. One thing for sure is that we would gain a deep, healthy sense of awe!
Let us rise above all the lesser things. Let us set our hearts upon approaching the Divine. Let the deepest parts of us yearn to know the mysteries and wonders of the Lord. May we hunger after Him with sentiments that stir deep in our souls. Pray that we can be of those who know well how the depths in us can call out for the endless reaches of God.
