Men, Lighter Than A Breath

Surely men of low degree are just a breath, and men of high degree are a lie. In the balances they will go up. They are together lighter than a breath. Psalm 62:9

Two men lay dying. One of the men is in the private ward of the most expensive hospital. The other man lies on a crude bed in a dirty back room. They both await their last breath of air. They gasp, and they die.

In an instant, both men´s lives end with that last breath of air. It did not matter that one had it all and the other had nothing. The gift of life left them both. The rich man´s wealth, power, or prestige only gave him a prettier setting to die in. What is it that we cherish so much about wealth? Why do we chase it so? In the same breath, we are all alike when that breath is called away from us.

To a person who contemplates, it must turn our minds to weigh what truly matters. Is there anything in life of real value? Is there any hope for any of us?

What they place their hope in will distinguish one person from the next. For the vain, it will be that someone remembers them. Or that something of what they accumulated remains for someone else. Those who hope in God don´t have to think only of themselves, their name, or their possessions. They are free from worries about what was gained or lost. For them, all hope still lies in The Giver. They can enjoy the last breath of this life and the first breath of life in God´s presence. And that kind of breath never needs to end.

Surely men of low degree are just a breath, and men of high degree are a lie. In the balances they will go up. They are together lighter than a breath.  Psalm 62:9 (WEB)
