A quote from Charles Spurgeon on social media started a chatter from readers. The quote had probably been taken out of context. But it made him sound like we should be satisfied by reading our Bibles and then seek no further word from God. To be fair, some readers did stand up for God. They defended His right and ability to speak to each of us today.
The argument sounded like a pleasing reminder to trust our Bibles. It might have been a simple warning to keep close to the teachings and not go off on tangents. But words are tricky. The enemy of our soul is wily. He is still very determined to keep us from the Lord. We cannot afford to listen to any words that would keep us from personal engagement with God.
Instead, let us seek the Lord all the more. Drive our hearts hard after Him with the full intention of finding Him. We must press closer until His instructions are clear each day. Edge nearer until His whispered guidance is booming in our ears. If it is truly God we seek, His encouragement will correspond with Scripture. It will not lead us anywhere else but closer still. So, strain those ears with heart and soul. Listen for the Lord. He is calling us today.
Dear Lord, lead us through this maze of voices. Some would keep us from a close and engaging relationship with You. Speak to us. Enable us to detect Your Spirit as He guides us. Draw us so close that we can recognize and trust Your encouragement. Before we follow anything else we hear from our world, let us seek Your heart on every matter. Give us a walk with You this close, we pray. Amen
1 John 4:1 ESV / Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
2 Timothy 4:3-4 ESV / For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
2 Peter 2:1 ESV / But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.
Colossians 2:8 ESV / See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.
John 8:47 ESV / Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.”
