Love Enemies

33. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you, Matthew 5:43-44

Christ teaches some things that we struggle to get the hang of.  He says not to love only those who love us but also those who have it in for us.  This may sound easy, but it´s not.

Loving those who treat us right doesn´t score many points in spiritual realms. God calls for a whole new nature. It is quite contrary to ours. We tend to guard against attack, not to open ourselves up to it. Yet somewhere in God´s wisdom, can He see the benefit of love. God is like that. We are too wrapped up in ourselves. We spend our time and effort chasing what pleases us. It is time to pray for change.

Dear Lord, we have tried to follow Your lead and direction to love others. But the task is greater than our earthly nature permits.  Please let us edge closer to You and find strength where ours ends.  Let Your nature overshadow ours, and provide what we lack. Make the loving bond we share shine through our lives. Show the world around us You are here and live in us, we pray. Amen

Romans 12:20 ESV / To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.”

Luke 6:28 ESV / Bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.

1 John 4:8 ESV / Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.

1 Peter 3:9 ESV / Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.
