Jesus and Prayer

In praying, don’t use vain repetitions as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their much speaking. Matthew 6:7

Prayer has fallen out of popularity in our modern worldviews. Even so, some still consider there to be a God above. We will adjust ourselves to Him. We will seek communication or our existence is pointless.

The more serious prayers are often reserved for the deathbed, troubled, or suffering. We have many types of prayers and many reasons for them. Some forms are personal and engage both the Lord and the humble worshipper. But a lot of them are superficial and ritualistic.

If prayers are to place us in contact with the Spirit of God, then they should be sincere. If they do not expose our souls to the presence of the Almighty, then we cannot expect our prayers to achieve much. Christ led us in this direction both by example and by His words.

Jesus flat-out warns us about certain types of prayer. We cannot let prayer become mechanical, or throw words around.  He calls for us to make it personal and genuine. He wants us to direct ourselves consciously to Him.  He is an intelligent entity, far more everlasting than we can imagine.  He is here.  This is our moment to communicate, to listen, and to bond. In short, every prayer should be our chance to encounter the Divine. Let´s give it our all!

Dear Jesus, help us all to examine our prayer life as often as possible.  Teach us to walk each moment enveloped in our deep and intimate walk with You.  Help us to listen for Your whisper and direct ourselves completely to You.  Let us live for those moments with You. And may we enjoy this bond always, even throughout eternity. Amen
