Looking below the surface of our religious notions, we find our motives for thinking and acting as we do. Christians are moved to their beliefs for many different reasons. Some come searching for something better than the world we see around us. Some look for a sense of security that their doctrines give them that they deciphered right. And still, others look to God because of some unexplainable tug on their attention. Whatever our motives are, Christians have chosen to look to Christ. He is the new center that we can focus our lives on. Or at least, this is what we shoot for.
It is a noble claim that God is who and what we turn to. We could not opt for a better choice. Our Maker and Redeemer would be where our hearts long to be and who we put first. But there is a big difference between claiming something and carrying it out.
Christ gives us a gem of instruction. If we can get our eye on Him and keep it there, all else becomes much easier. He is only the focus of our lives as long as we focus these lives on Him. No amount of motives, notions, or actions can replace this need to dwell on Him. Run to Him. Seek Him throughout our day. Look for His presence and His movement in all that we face. When God looms into the focus our eyes demand, we will have found all we will ever need.
Dear Jesus, draw us unto You. Become the first thing and the only thing on our minds. If we think something, let us run it to You. If our heart goes out to something, let it first go to You. If our eyes see something, let them see You first, then whatever we behold will be the light of Your presence. Our entire existence takes form and purpose as we look to You. Please help us direct our complete attention to You. We pray. Amen
