Taking the literal meaning of Biblical texts is rarely beneficial. It limits God´s voice of instruction and sets us up as judges over the value the message holds. Christ says that He will go to the Father and vouch for those who profess their allegiance to Him. But it would be absurd to think that all we have to do is make a declaration and all eternity is won. The spiritual weight of a text lies in what it stirs deep within each believer.
The devious hearts of our fallen race look for a simple and easy road to heaven. We want the promises the Scriptures offer but rarely live up to the demands. Jesus speaks the truth when He says that He will go to bat for those who are His. But no amount of catchy phrases or bold statements can mean that we belong to Christ. Hearts need to go out to Jesus. Souls need to search for Him. When a believer truly determines to find Christ, they set their lives out on a journey. It is a bent of the soul and a type of obsession. Our Savior must be ours, and we must know that we are His at all costs. That is the kind of believer whom Christ will stand up for.
As long as we sit around toying with our religion, we cannot say that we are in God´s hands. But if we go the extra mile to make sure that we are fully committed, we can be. We know the things required of us are greater than our abilities. This means someone else must make up for our insufficiency. We need Jesus. We confess that we are unable to go where God asks us to on our own. We throw ourselves upon Jesus. We include everything in our lives: family, careers, possessions, and desires. He guides us into total dependence on Him. This is a process that gradually grows from the moment we realize we need Him. It never stops growing as we learn how much we need Him each day. If we confess a tie like that to Jesus, He can confess it to God the Father as well.
Dear Jesus, we want to make You our All. Please give us with what we need to accomplish it. Make up for our lack of will, urgency, and ability. We have sensed our need for You and come with hearts in hand. Please have us. We want to know You. Then, on that day, You can say to the Father that You know us because of all the time we have spent together. For this kind of bond with You, we pray. Amen
But whoever denies me before men, I will also deny him before my Father who is in heaven. Matthew 10:33 WEB
37 He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me isn’t worthy of me. 38 He who doesn’t take his cross and follow after me isn’t worthy of me. 39 He who seeks his life will lose it; and he who loses his life for my sake will find it.
