Many Christians puff themselves up and say they know what God wants. “We have to bring sinners into the church,” they say. Or, “It is our job to condemn sin and make others stop living like they do.” They base their mission on what they have been told or texts found in the Bible. Jesus did say to spread the Good News to the world. But the call was first to a much more humble service.
Our modern world has lost the concept of Kings and royalty. But there was a day when it made a good illustration. Those who served at the king´s table were carefully selected. They worked hard at knowing what the king needed or wanted at any given moment. They got to know their master and read where he was going so that they could provide him service. This kind of service determined the servant´s worth. As Christians, we could learn a lot about how to serve Him, if we care to.
There are already a lot of people out there doing a lot of good for their community and God. Still, let us examine carefully where we are getting our influence. Is it our church or a member giving us our missions? Or are we walking closely enough to our Heavenly King to see where He would have us serve? Dear Lord, we struggle to let go of our human ways and look first to You. Help us realize that we can grow closer to You. When we do, we will see where Your Spirit is moving and be there with You to offer our service. Forgive our former zeal, but turn us into true followers, we pray. Amen

Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. …
