The Sick Need a Doctor

When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”  On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Mark 2:16-17 (NIV)

It would be very easy to have our attention drawn to the people who claim to believe in God and worship Him.  Often this is our normal way of weighing all that we come across.  We lump ourselves within a group of people or category in our minds along with those whom have chosen to look to Jesus and to God.  The important people in the church in Jesus´ time did this same thing.  They saw people who lived life in a different way than theirs and they considered them as unclean sinners.

Do we really think this is what Jesus tried to teach?  Did He give the religious people any encouragement in their line of thinking?  Do we actually think that because we have made a choice and taken steps towards faith in Him, that we are completely healed and out of hot water?

It is not such a great stretch to see that Jesus was trying to show us of our need for Him.  Our Savior possesses something that we can find nowhere else.  All mankind must be found in Him because He is the Link, the Bond the Payment which finally brings us into alignment with our Maker.  As Christians, the only advantage we should imagine having is that we have been made aware of this fact, and therefore stand in a slightly better position to step out on that faith.

If we believe we are already healed than we do not need to consider things like this and could find ourselves in a dangerous place of not looking for more of Jesus.  In that case our disease has attacked our eyes and prevented us from seeing our dissention and disease.  This is a frightful place to be, but the religious power-horses of Jesus´ day had managed to stumble into it somehow.

Rather let us pray that this same tendency is not found among us.  Let us work along with the Holy Spirit aggressively to make sure we do not slide into this land of deceit.  All of us have fallen prey to sin and we live in an environment surrounded by all kinds of vicious bacteria which will waste no time in breaking down our defense system.  We still all are in great need of our Doctor.

Dear Jesus, thank You for coming and for bringing healing with You.  Give us we pray, as part of the remedy You possess, an awareness of our need to have You. Like a healing potion, let us ingest all that we can of You so that we may have that healing inside of us.  Let our loving personal relationship with You strengthen us and fortify us against any malicious ideas that would separate us from you.  Especially the deadly thought of not needing more of You.
