And, taking the hand of the young child, he said to her: “Tai´i-tha cu´mi,” which, translated, means: “Maiden, I say to you, Get up!” Mark 5:41 (Reference)
Now there are many different levels of importance which we may place upon our Savior Jesus Christ. Few dispute the importance of His sacrificial act for our sins, but so many of us who call ourselves Christians fail to give the Son of God sufficient credit. We may pray loudly and declare publicly all that we owe to Him, but are we really honoring Him by our quiet thoughts and actions?
Those who uphold doctrines of the trinity would lift Jesus up as high as God the Father to sit at the same level of authority and power. Others prefer to look at Him as a beloved Son whose power is bestowed on as the Father sees fit. One thing is for certain though, all scripture either pointed forward to Him, directly at His walk of life and death here on earth, or back at the significance His visit holds for us in these last days. The Bible too puts Jesus front and center in any and all hopes for a future beyond the limits of our current home.
Therefore, as human beings, and lacking any real authority over universal themes and powers, it may be safe to say that this Jesus Christ is significantly higher than us and more than worthy of any and all respect we could possibly give Him. The love and favor God the Father showered upon His Son will demonstrate that He is well pleased at our puny efforts to lift up His worthy Son and pay Him any courtesy within our powers.
Perhaps a deep unconscious realization of this fact is why we approach Christianity at all. We even wear it in the name we have given to those who would put their faith in Him. Therefore it should not surprise anyone that we step out on that faith and pay Him tribute, no matter how small and frivolous. Jesus Himself was persecuted and executed because of His claims on being part of the Deity. Therefore we might want to arm ourselves with the thought that if we are going to make much of Him, then there will always be those who would slap us in the face or torture us somehow.
But looking past all the chaff and into this moment of Jesus and this small girl, we can see what effect it had on a person like us. The girl lies there motionless under the sleep of death. Jesus approaches her and takes her by the hand. He tells her to wake up. At the sound of His voice, she wakes up and begins to walk. All who witness this miraculous wonder are astonished. Death bows down before the Son of God and leaves immediately. Jesus calmly tells her parents to feed her as her health is restored and she is free to live again.
Wouldn´t it be nice to unleash this kind of power to the world we live in today? Wouldn´t we like the very Son of God to place His hand in ours? We may not be able to grasp all that He is nor the power which He may have, but what does that concern us when by His touch and His voice we can be raised to life again? What a wonderful day it would be if we woke up at the sound of His sweet voice. If we could just feel His hand lifting us out of our slumber and restoring us again to health.
Dear Jesus, please allow us to pay You a little respect today. You have something that we need. At Your touch and at Your command we can rise from our bed of death and be filled with true life. Thank You for coming to our house to call us. Please let us react to Your gestures in a way that gratifies You and honors both You and Your Father.
Amen
