The Secret

At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.”  Luke 10:21 (NIV)

The Word of God is spread to needy people.   The suffering are restored to health.  Darkness is dispersed.  Jesus full of the Spirit of God cries out in praise.  He exclaims His approval of His Fathers choice.  He praises Him for opening hearts to learn of the wonders of God.  But is there some exclusivity here?  Are there some who will receive?  Are there others who think they are too smart?  Will the doors of understanding open easier for the simple man?  Will those of us who think we are so clever, have a more difficult time getting His point?  Just who is it that the treasures of God are for?  Are they for those superior minds who can recite the entire Bible from memory?  Are the secrets of God reserved for those who have made it through the finest universities and hold the highest degrees in theology?  Or are the wonderful secrets of the Lord opened to us all?  Can even the simplest of us come to know Him?

Jesus is rejoicing.  Has He good reason to?  Awareness of God is spread. Hurting people are healed.  Lost are being saved.  Are there so many reasons Jesus could be happy?  So why speak of secrets?  Why talk about hidden things?  Haven´t we got a good picture?  Don´t we all understand clearly enough?  What more could there be?  What is the Lord hinting at?  Is it possible that even though we feel so clever, there is still something more?  Could there be wonders that we are missing?  With all our confidence in what we have learned far, what could Jesus possibly refer to when He speaks of hidden things?

As we observe the Pharisees and the Disciples can we see that there seems always to be a little more about the Lord still to perceive?  Were some missing out because of their confidence in their own mental abilities and studies?  Were others still learning daily as they walked right by the Savior´s side?  Where do we stand?

Could we leave the question for each one to take up with the Lord?  How much do we want to learn?  Could we move past that and consider what the secret Is?  Are we curious?  Do we even want to know?  Or do our attitudes and our actions reveal which kind of believer we already are?

Could the real secret be God Himself?  Could it be that behind all that we can learn about Him, He is still the wonder behind it all?  Would it be possible to know so many things about Him, but miss completely a connection to Him?  Could we study our whole lives and never come to know Him in real experience?  Would this knowledge be a privilege?   Would being in an intimate relationship with the Creator, be something that is hidden from many people?  Would many things hide from us the fact that each of us could have that communion daily?  Is it a secret that God can be closer to us than any human friend or loved one could possibly be?  Is the Presence of the Almighty hidden from us right now?  Are we missing a vital connection with Him at this very moment?  Is this a secret?  If we were humble, if we accept a low understanding of Him, could He reveal that secret to us today?

Dear Lord, please give us an attitude to search out the secrets of You.  No matter how studied we are, no matter how much we have learned; please let us burn for more knowledge of You.  But the knowledge most dear and the one we seek, is that of knowing You.  Please open that secret to us.  Do not hide Yourself from us.  We want to know You!  We want to learn to love You!  Humble us so that we may be worthy of having You hidden from us no more!

Amen
