Jesus Walks On Seas

When they had rowed three or three and a half miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were terrified.  John 6:19(NIV)

In the story, Jesus came to the Disciples.  He came at the right moment.  Maybe it wasn´t the moment they would have preferred, but it was the moment God knew was appropriate.  He came in an amazing Way.  He came walking on the very waters which were threatening them.  The waves of strife had no power over Him.  He effortlessly strode over them.  The rough sea was put under foot.  His Disciples saw Him.  They were frightened and surprised.  The impossible is possible for the Son of God!  He can walk where man cannot!  What we think cannot possibly be, is nothing for Him!  He can surprise us too!  He can amaze us and thrill us!  He can come to us when we think it is completely impossible.  When we are furthest from Him and there seems no land in sight.  Jesus can come to be with us!  He can make it to wherever our vessel is!  He can save us!

Why is it that we have turned our attention towards Jesus in the first place?  We have a beautiful planet in which to live.  We have built up cities, societies and lives full of activity.  We begin early to learn we need to go here and do that.  We have routines and customs.  We have jobs and schools.  Why on earth do we approach the Lord?  Why do we contemplate God?  Why do we bother to look towards Someone that is so far outside of our structured earthly reality?  Why look to the Divine?  Is it because we want to have this hope of Something greater?  Is it because deep within our souls we want to be touched by a Higher Being?  Is it because we want our spirits to soar when we are brought into an awareness of God?

The Disciples had spent some time in the Presence of Jesus.  They had seen many wonderful and unexplainable things.  They had seen Christ perform awesome miracles before their very eyes.  Now here on the lake they are confronted again by the mystery and wonder of Him.  He comes to them effortlessly strolling upon the water!  Wow!  We can read of it and try to picture it.  But can we imagine witnessing such a sight?  Would we be filled with fear too?  Would the experience of seeing the Saviour as He is, leave us trembling and undone too?

For those who are daring enough to go past the common complacency of our current religion, could it still be possible to experience the Lord personally today?  Are there still some amongst us that actually want to see Jesus as He is?  Who alive is looking to see Jesus in this Way?  Who out there would truly like to see Christ in a Way that will startle us and frighten us to the core?  Would it scare us if the parameters of our reality were to be shattered and we could actually see Jesus right now acting above what we know is possible in our world?  Are we opening ourselves to allow Him to thrill us so?  What is impossible in our reality is completely possible and natural for God!  The Son of God is not limited by what limits us!  Whose faith is allowing them to look at Jesus like that now?  Who of us are looking at Him with eyes to see?  Who is listening to Christ with ears to hear?  Who is letting Jesus define what can and cannot be done?  Who is left that is open to witness the miracle of Jesus?  Are we?

Dear Jesus, we read of how You walk on water.  We read of the reaction it had on those who saw.  We wonder what reaction we would have if we were blessed to see such a sight.  Are we prepared?  Are we open to see?  Are we open to believe?  Are we open to know You as You are?  Please prepare our hearts for the thrilling discoveries yet to come as we draw closer to You!

Amen
