Misreading Jesus

His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.”  Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.  John 11:12-13 (NIV)

Before we think we have gained so much ground with Jesus, should we get one point clear?  If we care to examine well the way people took Jesus before, can we see that time and time again people failed to catch the direction of His words?  Do we think that we are that much better?  Should we be just a little smarter than our brethren in Christ if we are able to learn from their mistakes?  Even the closest of Jesus´ followers repeatedly grabbed the first conclusion that came to mind and then Jesus had to bring them to His intended understanding.  Is this because we of the world?  We have ways of thought.  We have learned how to read our situation and our environment.  But it is always still the world.  Jesus was sent to us from a different Place altogether.  His Home is with God.  There everything runs to a different tune.  Everything in Heaven is seen first and clearly with its relation to and its origins in God.  Here we fall short of seeing this connection.  Do we think we would be in a better position to understand Jesus if at least we knew this was our tendency?

We have plenty of examples in the Bible where people stepped out in complete confidence in their own understanding.  The story of Jesus is a profusion of cases where He had to gently guide us back on course.  Should we think that the religious scene today has suddenly stopped doing this?  Do we think we are now superior beings?  As we look around us do we get the impression that we are more saintly than the Disciples who actually saw Jesus face to face?  Are we more pure and far more informed than those who walked shoulder to shoulder with Christ?

If we have decided that we don´t have room for pride, then could we seek an attitude which will help us?  Could we positively use the confided information we have been blessed with?  Could we use the knowledge of the tendency of our race, to bring us closer to our Lord?  Could we start taking steps that will truly turn us into followers of Christ?  If we know that we tend to see only our world and our relation to it, could we ask Jesus to be extra near to us each step of the Way?  Could we seek to improve our relationship with Him so that He can guide our every turn?  Do we really believe that He is alive?  Could He still be at work today?  If He is, then will He help us?  If Jesus reigns on High, then can He rule in our lives too?  If we can get close enough to Him, then do we have to see only our agendas?  Can we learn to follow each day?  Can we become disciples of the Lord?  Can we let Him show us what the Father wants us to know in every given moment?  Do we have to go on misreading Jesus?  Do we have to settle for lower intended meanings?  Can we learn to ask?

Dear Jesus, please guard us against our tendency to look first to our surrounding world.  We know this world and we don´t always know how to take Your Words.  They come to us as from a strange and different Land.  We ask You today to be the Shoulder that we lean upon.  Be the Guiding Hand that leads us forward and upward, even unto God!  Teach us to follow!  Let us see our need to be close enough to You!  So close, that we can detect where You would have us place each step.  Give us conscious daily walk with You that is so real that it is You Who defines Your Word for us in every given moment!  In this Way Your Word will live in us!  We will finally be able to follow!  And the things of God will come into view!  Teach us today we pray!

Amen
