“You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” John 18:37 (NIV)
Talk about a strange trial! They bring what should be a renegade and a trouble-maker before the governor. For the seriousness of the sentence they are seeking we should think that He has done some pretty awful crimes. Nothing on earth can prepare us though for what we find. Jesus is meek. He is humble. He is just going along with their charade. It may even seem that there is more to His story than what His accusers are hurling at Him, but He is without the appearance of concealing guilt. Instead He admits that it was for the very reason of being here now that all this is happening. To top it off, Jesus mentions truth. In this crazy trial scene under ridiculous circumstances the Accused merely states that this is His duty. Christ is here to testify to truth! Wow! He also says that anyone who is on the side of truth listens to Him! How in the world could Pilate relate? How can we?
In our age today the legal system has turned into a show. Our system is built on the appearance of justice. Our courtrooms have become a world of suspicion. Right where we speak of the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth there has grown a monster of half-truths, construed truths and downright ulterior use of truth. Step into a courtroom today and there is no way to say what the outcome will be. We have a hard time relating. How can we handle Someone testifying to real Truth? Who is even listening for it?
Listening is something that we today are not so good at. Not only do we think we already walk in truth, but we also think we don´t need anyone else to tell us about it. If we do listen to somebody, usually it is because they are telling us things we already think we know. We listen to them because it makes us feel good to hear that they share the same ideas we already have. But Jesus is not like that. What Jesus has to tell us, we have no other Way of relating! Like Pilate in his courtroom, we hear the words of Jesus. He is talking of other Kingdoms. He is talking of another system of Justice. He is telling us of a Truth altogether different from anything we know. It is such a stretch for us that few are interested in even trying to relate?
Pilate lives out his crazy trial situation to his undoing. Jesus is calm and collected through it all because He can see God working out the universal fate of all. He knows that a far more important trial is actually happening on an infinitely larger scale. We now sit in the seat to decide what to set our hopes upon. What are we going to call the Truth? Who are we going to listen to? Jesus knows where we are heading too. Are we going to follow Pilate and give in to the pressure of our times? Or are we going to make sure that our ears are open to hear Him testifying to The Truth? Are we really listening for Him? Are we on the side of Truth today?
The truth gets itself twisted more by the day. It seems that everyone would try and tell us that they have it for us and we should listen to them. But far more important than our clamorous times is the Word we hear from You. Please speak to our hearts today. Teach us of things that are out of this world. Teach us of real Truth! Teach us of God and His Home! Open our ears to hear! Let us sit on the side of those who listen! Let us sit with those on the side of Truth we pray!
