On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.´ Acts 1:4 (NIV)
We are not good at waiting these days. It kills us in our modern society to sit back and leave things in the hands of God. We think we must do something. We think we´ve got to get stuff done and do it quickly. We think our faith is weak if we are not acting out on it. But is faith in God quite contrary to faith in ourselves? The hardest thing for us humans to do is to want the promised Gift, but be the patient children who are worthy of receiving their Prize.
Jesus spoke about the Holy Spirit. He promised to send this greatest of all Gifts to His followers. A promise from above is sure. But for a promise to be fulfilled from God, He needs to see that the conditions are met first. God gives freely, but not frivolously. God will never send His Own Spirit unto people seeking their own agendas. When He finds hearts ready, tried and proven, then He is more anxious than the receiver to bless the worthy follower with “The Gift!”
More than anything we too want to be worthy recipients. We want to be filled with Your Spirit. But we know that we are in need of cleansing. Give us please the strength and urgency to press forward in faith. Let our sincerity and utter need of You work their miracle inside our souls until You see we too are ready for Your Gift!
