“You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit!’ Acts 7:51 (NIV)
God´s people of old struggle to keep their focus upon the Lord. Time and time again they let their adoration fall from the lofty heights of coming before God to setting their affections on idols, other gods and to the customs of other nations. Over and over the Lord has to correct their wandering hearts and direct them back to Him. They choose their traditions, their religious institutions, their heritage and the things fabricated by man. God has never been able to rest in His attempt to bring hearts back to worship Him alone. Where are those who would set Him above all those lesser things? Where are the worshippers who will follow the Spirit of God and seek to bring themselves humbly into His Presence?
The Spirit welling up within Stephen makes it impossible for him to hold it in. He blurts out the reprimand that stands to judge all the ages. How can we hold our hearts so far away from the Lord? How can we continue to run after every other thing under the sun? Why must we always resist the calling of the Holy Spirit? Who will break our traditions and realize our need to actually approach the God we should know and love? Will it be us today?
For those of us who care to hear the reprimand, let us realize our guilt. Let us turn from our distractions and seek to be with You. Help us past our tendencies and let us burn for nothing less than Your Presence here with us now we pray!
