Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! Acts 8: 20 (NIV)
What does it cost to become an ordained minister in a reputable Christian church these days? Is it something available to any interested soul? Or have things gotten out of hand? Credentials can be bought online but if we really wanted to work for the Lord by dedicating our services to ministry, would we need to dig a little deeper into our pockets?
A man tries to pay Peter and John for the right to lay his hand on others and impart the Holy Spirit on them. How sad to hear of someone who has so poorly interpreted all that God Is and all that He is about. This misguided soul thinks that God with us is a commodity or something we can possess. It may be something that we can have, but are relationships ever purchased or owned? Or does knowing someone and loving them come to us in a completely different manner? Are true relationships built rather through times spent, care for one another, and in giving and receiving? Do we begin a walk with God with baby steps and then grow in strength of trust and closeness? Should we think that the gifts of Spirit would come to anyone without this intimacy of a loving relationship? Do we need to hear Peter´s rebuke again too?
Are we turning our faith into a commodity? Please examine our hearts with us today. Where are we with You? Can we come any closer to You now? Tell us that we can we pray!
