Putting God To The Test

putting-God-to-the-test

Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of the disciples a yoke that neither we nor our fathers have been able to bear?  Acts 15:10  (NIV)

At first glance the thought of putting God to the test might sound clever.  It may seem as though we would be stretching our faith.  It may look like we are tasting to see that He is good.  But there may be more evil hidden in this forbidden fruit than we would like to imagine.  The problem lies not with God but with men.  Everything is upset the moment man sets himself so high that he can sit in judgement over God.  This is wrong.  No amount of flattery on our side can make it right again until man learns to bow before the Lord and let Him be right whether we see it yet or not!  Is this what we do?  Or could there be many times where we ourselves are putting God to the test?

Religion can provide an excellent breeding ground for this kind of trap.  Every time we try to decide what we and others should be doing to please God we may step into the shoes meant for God.  The Lord knows how to work in the hearts of His followers.  But it is His work and for His glory.  Only He can save each individual.  His hand alone can lead.  So shouldn´t we rather point others ever fuller unto the Lord instead of putting Him to the test?

Dear Lord,

Help us all to see our need to be with You!  Please do not let us stand in Your shoes and tell our neighbor the things You want them doing now!  Rather teach us to hear You ourselves and be better reflections of how You are instructing us!

Amen
