(The Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, and that there are neither angels nor spirits, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.) Acts 23:8 (NIV)
They all have their opinions. They do not coincide. Are we speaking of the Pharisees, the Sadducees, or us? Some want to call themselves the remnant, the chosen, or the true children of God. Unbelievers also hold their own beliefs. They desperately cling to their own intelligence. They refuse to acknowledge God out of pride. Our beliefs are something we all hold. Some hold them tighter than others. But it is our beliefs that shape us. Do we consider often how our beliefs are molding us right now?
The person who has only themselves to put their hope in will soon find themselves frustrated. The world will not bow to us as we can make our own egos do. We may control a few element of our lives by sickness, accident and loss are sure to touch us someday. Our fixed points we belief in soon turn to frustration and despair. Except when we turn to God. Those who have God for their hope will suffer the same losses. Frustration can come to them but only as they look to themselves or the world. But since the world is not our focus, and since our selves are not the center, we can always have hope in the One we believe in. In the most crucial moments our beliefs can lift our eyes to the Lord or they can cast us on ourselves. Shall we stop to check where our beliefs lie now?
When we feel frustrated, help us turn and look only to You! Teach us to focus our lives and our beliefs only on You!
