Stumbling

Stumbling

As it is written: “See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”  Romans 9:33  NIV

We cannot see it.  But it has tripped men up for centuries.  It still trips up all who are not careful.  Every single one of us, who forgets to look for it, will surely fall over it.  We do not learn either.  We may know it is there, stumbled over it many times, and still we find ourselves tripping up again.  It is that rock that God says He deliberately place in our path.  Those travelling towards the Lord know that we cannot get there on our own.  We know that our righteousness will never be enough.  We know we need to be good people and to seek to be pure.  But wham!  We trip again!  We try to make it on our own effort or works!  We stumble!  We fall!

But it does not have to be this way.  For our lack of sight, God gave us a Way that will keep us from falling.  If we are on our knees, we may be down, but we cannot fall far.  In fact, we are just where we need to be to keep ourselves from stumbling!  It is a cool trick, and it works!  If we look to Jesus, if we stay with Him, if we refuse to walk or stand on our own, then we are safe!  We don´t have to stumble over the same stone again!  Shall we get down on our knees and seek Christ to cover us?  Shall we seek to be so close to Him now, that His righteousness is seen instead of ours?  Shall we fall to our knees to keep from stumbling anymore?

Dear Lord,

Only being with You keeps us from stumbling on our own.  Bring us to our knees to seek You for our very lives we pray!

Amen
