The Motives

The Motives

Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God.  1st Corinthians 4:5

Gentle hands took the man by the arm and guided him to where the minister was standing.  A firm handshake and a contagious smile were accompanied by a heart-warming invitation to join the next meeting.  As they parted company the man was glad to have something to look forward to.  From the rumors, this would be his chance to come to know something more of God, join a church family, and fill some of that void within his heart.  But when the meeting came, all his anticipation slowly slipped away.  The flashing smile and flowery speech brought more attention to the dashing preacher and left a deeper hole of disillusion in the man´s heart.

What went wrong?  Where is the trouble?  The church was growing daily in numbers.  The people were happy to attend.  But when the message points towards earthly gains, then Heavenly ones will suffer.  Some aching hearts may rejoice to find a supportive social club to join.  But the ones whose hearts burn out of a need to find God, nothing can ever substitute.  Should we check our motives to see how much of our religion is really bringing us closer to God’?

Dear Lord,

Come and sit with us now to examine our souls.  We would like to hear Your opinion on how directed we are to You.  Help us see if any of our motives fall short of You, we pray!
