But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do. 1st Corinthians 8:8 NIV
It was the first time she had been to this foreign country. She was impressed by the beauty, the people and the customs of the people living there. When it came time to eat, she discovered a problem. Everyone wanted her to try their best dishes and she could appreciate the delightful sight and smell of them. But nearly every dish contained some kind of meat that she had never eaten. She had grown up in a Christian home. Her parents and her church community had taught her well on what foods were acceptable to eat and what was not. She had never even been tempted to try unclean food, until then!
What is a person supposed to do when their beliefs are put to the test? How can we react, and who can we turn to? Our Savior and His Apostles have all tried to help us find our Answer. They have taught us to look higher than our guidelines. Even those who eat can learn from their instruction. All are encouraged to feed our hearts, not on any material or matter that we can find here on earth. It is the highest calling for those who would hear it. We can look beyond our stomachs, far beyond our best culinary delights, and we can feast our eyes upon the God Who prepares it all for us!
Help us when our eyes fall from You and make too much of our world. Help us turn in hunger to seek satisfaction in You! Be the food and the drink that we yearn for today, we pray!
