For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body–whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free–and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 1st Corinthians 12:13 NIV
The preacher told a little joke in church one morning. It was the one of some people who were being showed around the streets of Heaven. The angel that led them was answering their questions. Finally they came up to the wall that divided the New Jerusalem. The people asked the angel why there was a wall in Heaven to separate. The angel said, “Shhh! The Baptists live over there and they think they are the only ones here!” He quickly covered his little joke by explaining that the preacher at the Baptist church down the street was a friend of his and was probably using the same joke about them that week.
Although we may smile at our denominational differences, we still need to be careful. The walls we build between us and others have not been put there by God. Jesus died for Jews and gentiles alike. All have sinned and are in need of the sanctifying blood of Christ. The same Spirit is given from God not for us to build walls, but to draw hearts unto the Lord. Shall we embrace the fact that there are different parts of the body of Christ? Shall we follow Jesus´ example and accept people from different backgrounds? Shall we pray that we are able to build each other up and bring souls closer to God with what has been entrusted to us in Christ?
Teach us all to keep our focus upon You! Let the Spirit and the message You give us today bring hearts to You, we pray!
