Letter Kills, Spirit Gives

Letter Kills, Spirit Gives

He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant–not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.  2nd Corinthians 3:6  NIV

In the classroom the teacher hung a few simple rules:  I sit in my chair, I am quiet, I respect others, I use material correctly, etc.  The rules were written in big red letters.  One could not hope that each squirreling member would comply with these rules the entire day.  Each child, from the best to the worst, would break them at one point or another during class.  The rules were good, and while they were followed, class proceeded well.  When the children forgot them, the teacher had to point back to them sternly.  Sometimes discipline had to come for not obeying the rules to the letter.

We are often like the students.  We can try to obey a set of rules that we can´t possibly follow as we should.  But just like those children who started doing what children do, we will fall short of what our Teacher intends for us.  So God has another Way.  He provides more than a list of rules.  He sends us His Son.  He sends His Spirit to enter His Children.  He teaches us of a new covenant, one that is not merely written in big bold letters.  He would write it in our hearts.  He wants to put His Spirit inside of us to feed us our instruction in the moment we need it most! Shall we actively listen for the Spirit of God as He moves in our hearts right now?

Dear Lord,

Move deep within us!  Stir up Your Spirit inside us and teach us to follow the still small voice as Your Living covenant speaks to our hearts all throughout our day, we pray!

Amen
