For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends. 2nd Corinthians 10:18
Two men were up for promotion. One had more years of experience. The other man had talent, hunger, and high working standards. The man who counted on his years of service felt that he should be the one promoted and made it a priority to point it out to the boss often. In the end, it was the one who did not approve himself who got the job. Are we ever guilty of approving ourselves and our faith instead of seeking a relationship with the Lord that He can commend us for?
We need to be careful not to take too much confidence in calling ourselves Christians. Our time is not to be spent weighing ourselves against others. That precious time can be better spent working on our relationship with God. He is the only One who can commend us for where we are and what we have worked towards. The temptation will always be there for us to think we are better off than someone else. But those who would have the Lord commend them are not those who concern themselves with such trivial issues. Could we gain some ground in our relationship with Christ today? Will He approve of us if we do all that we can to try?
Help us lift our attention from ourselves and to place the urgency upon how closely we are walking with You. Let our love and need for You be our commendably quality, we pray!
